Le’lar Marshall — chose nursing because it is a profession that resonates with both her heart and mind. From a young age, she was always the one to offer help—whether it was comforting a friend, caring for a family member, or simply being a source of support for others. For Le’Lar, nursing feels like an extension of her natural instincts to help and care for those in need.
She believes that nursing is not just about administering medication or following protocols; it’s about being present, listening, and providing care during some of the most difficult and profound moments in a person’s life.
As a Black woman, Le’Lar is acutely aware of the disparities within the healthcare system, particularly for communities that are often overlooked, including those who share her racial identity. She is passionate about being part of the solution, advocating for patients, and ensuring they are heard, seen, and supported in ways that honor their unique experiences.
Labor and delivery nursing holds a special place in Le’Lar’s heart due to the life-changing and transformative nature of the experience. She finds it deeply meaningful to support mothers during childbirth, knowing that this moment can carry significant emotional and physical challenges—especially for Black mothers, who often face systemic disparities in healthcare. Le’Lar is committed to being a reassuring presence at the bedside, ensuring that every mother feels respected, empowered, and cared for in such an intimate and vulnerable moment.
Service is at the core of Le’Lar’s identity. Beyond her nursing journey, she is dedicated to contributing to her community by volunteering at health fairs, participating in maternal health education programs, and offering help whenever possible. She believes that even the smallest acts of service can create ripples of positive change.
For Le’Lar, nursing is not merely a career—it is a promise: a promise to show up, listen, advocate, and provide compassionate care. As she continues her journey toward specializing in labor and delivery nursing, she is eager to make a difference—one patient, one family, and one birth at a time.
Skye Smith – Driven by a lifelong desire to make a meaningful impact, Skye Smith pursued a career in nursing following a personal event that profoundly shaped her understanding of the role healthcare professionals play in people’s lives. In 2017, Skye’s family was involved in a devastating car accident in which her youngest brother was severely injured, her mother suffered a concussion, and her middle brother tragically lost his life. As the only family member not directly involved in the accident, Skye assumed the role of caregiver and advocate, working closely with medical providers to navigate complex decisions during an incredibly challenging time. This life-altering experience solidified her decision to become a nurse and dedicate her career to helping others during their most vulnerable moments.
Skye’s areas of interest within nursing include labor and delivery, women’s health, and children’s health. She is deeply inspired by the critical role nurses play in supporting families through significant life transitions, such as childbirth, and fostering lifelong health for mothers and children. These specialties align with her passion for nurturing the next generation and providing compassionate, evidence-based care to families.
In addition to her clinical interests, Skye is committed to addressing the health and well-being of marginalized communities. Growing up, she witnessed the profound inequalities in access to quality and affordable healthcare, particularly among underserved populations. These disparities motivated her to pursue health advocacy and care that culturally empowers individuals and families in need.
Skye’s healthcare journey began with a health science degree from a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), where she learned the importance of resilience and adaptability—lessons she applied during the adversity of the COVID-19 pandemic. These experiences deepened her resolve to address inequities within healthcare systems and to contribute to building healthier, more equitable communities.
Through her nursing career, Skye seeks to combine her passion for labor and delivery, women’s and children’s health, and community advocacy. By educating and empowering patients, she aims to create healthier lives while honoring the memory of her loved ones, carrying forward a legacy of compassion, resilience, and service.
