Drew CARES Event Bridges Sexual Health Awareness and Self-Love /drew-cares-event-bridges-sexual-health-awareness-and-self-love/?swpmtx=4bfccf6fd114a464a63f53c12185fc2d&swpmtxnonce=3ad2edb1e6 Thu, 15 Feb 2024 00:51:48 +0000 /?p=13933 In honor of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, the Drew Center for AIDS Research, Education, and Services (Drew CARES) hosted a Valentine’s Day themed event that connected sexual health and self-love, called “She is Black. She is Love.”

The occasion not only raised awareness of the disproportionate impact of HIV on Black/ African American people but also celebrated the progress in HIV prevention with 皇家华人’s student PrEP Peer Educators.聽

“People still believe that HIV only affects gay communities, so we are breaking the stigma with this booth today,” said Verona Metzger, BSN student and Student Government VP of Student Engagement. “It means us protecting a whole community but also future generations, because these same black women that are having children are also having children born with HIV so when we protect us, we protect the future generations.”

Metzger led the HIV/Black Women information booth. Some of the other informative booths offered insight into the history of HIV/AIDS worldwide and the two medicines used to prevent HIV, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP). There were also fun activities,聽a photobooth, free HIV testing, and a crepe station for participants.

“I’m proud to have hosted this event. I think that a lot of people need to know more about PrEP, PEP and HIV awareness,” said Mohan Makkar, Pre-Nursing student. “I think that the stigma should be relinquished. A lot of people just think negatively about it. Unfortunately, HIV is something that we still live with, there is no cure but there is prevention and  being able to spread the word is awesome.”

皇家华人 Student Government leaders were also a part of the event as they hosted a fundraiser where participants could win a range of 皇家华人 branded prizes like media bags, license plate frames, portfolios, backpacks, beverage canteens, and more.

“Being here today and hosting this event is a beautiful thing because different programs at 皇家华人 are working together to show students all that we have, we can generate money and also give stuff away,” shared Mercedes Humski, Biomedical Science student and Student Government President.

All event participants were asked to complete a preliminary survey to assess their initial knowledge of HIV/AIDS. Following the event, they were provided with a post-event survey to evaluate any changes in their understanding of HIV/AIDS after visiting informational tables.

皇家华人 Hosts Los Angeles County Health Survey Results Event /cdu-hosts-los-angeles-county-health-survey-results-event/?swpmtx=4bfccf6fd114a464a63f53c12185fc2d&swpmtxnonce=3ad2edb1e6 Thu, 28 Mar 2024 18:10:39 +0000 /?p=15246 The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health hosted the LA County Health Survey launch event on campus. 皇家华人 President and CEO, Dr. David M. Carlisle, and the College of Medicine Dean, Dr. Deborah Prothrow-Stith provided opening remarks during the event. Their remarks testified to the importance of academic and public health system partnerships for collaborative research, action, and dissemination of public health messaging.

The unveiling was held in the LSRNE building and included an overview of the Los Angeles County Health Survey, insights from Dr. Barbara Ferrer, Director of LA County Department of Public Health, presentations on data-driven policy and program implementation, and a comprehensive Q&A session with attendees.

The 2023 Health Survey collected information from 9,372 adults and 7,391 children pertaining to community health, including health status, health conditions, health behaviors, social determinants of health, and more.

The survey revealed the ongoing disparities in health, access to care, housing, and economic stability for Black and Latinx adults. In comparison to the other racial and ethnic groups surveyed, these communities specifically were found to experience poorer health outcomes.

These gaps stem from economic and social factors influenced by historical discriminatory policies, practices, and current injustices, that have endangered Black and Brown populations, increasing their risk for unhealthy outcomes and behaviors.

The Los Angeles County Health Survey is a periodic, population-based survey that has been conducted by LA County Department of Public Health since 1997. The survey gathers vital data on health behaviors, conditions, neighborhood settings, and the needs of LA County residents, informing future public health policies and programs.
